Quick answer: Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) is a clinical and popular term for intense emotional pain in response to perceived rejection, criticism, or disapproval, most often discussed in connection with ADHD. It is not a formal diagnosis, but it overlaps with a well-studied concept called rejection sensitivity, which research links to misreading ambiguous cues, defensive or withdrawing reactions, and lower relationship satisfaction for both partners (Downey & Feldman,

Quick answer: When demand avoidance is understood as sensory, executive, and relational/emotional overload rather than as pathology or a simple drive for autonomy, it becomes clear why romantic relationships are one of the settings where this pattern shows up most intensely. Partners make more requests, carry more relational weight, and share more sensory and logistical space than almost anyone else in a person's life — which means a relationship can become, often unintention

Quick answer: PDA — most commonly known as Pathological Demand Avoidance, and increasingly reframed by autistic people as Persistent Drive for Autonomy — describes an intense, anxiety-driven resistance to everyday demands. Neither common framing fully captures what the research actually points to: a convergence of sensory sensitivity, executive functioning difficulty, and relational or emotional overload, all amplified by anxiety and intolerance of uncertainty, that makes ord

Quick answer: For people with anxious attachment — a pattern marked by fear of rejection and a strong need for closeness — sex often functions less as an expression of desire and more as a way to seek reassurance that a partner still loves and values them. Research shows attachment anxiety is linked to using sex to pursue closeness, validation, and relief from fear of abandonment, and is specifically associated with poorer sexual functioning and lower sexual and relationship

Quick answer: Fight, flight, freeze, and fawn are automatic physical reactions produced by the body's threat-detection and stress-response systems, not conscious choices. When the brain perceives danger, it triggers a fast cascade of hormonal and neurological changes — a burst of adrenaline, a shift in heart rate and blood flow, altered muscle tension — that prepares the body to fight, escape, go still, or appease, all before conscious thought has time to weigh in (Bracha, 20

Quick answer: Attachment style — the pattern a person develops for seeking closeness and security in relationships — directly shapes both why people want sex and how intimacy develops between partners. Research shows anxiously attached people are more likely to pursue sex to please a partner and secure closeness, avoidantly attached people are more likely to pursue sex to avoid conflict or maintain independence, and securely attached people are more likely to pursue sex for m

Quick answer: Trauma can produce measurable, lasting changes in both the brain and the body's stress-response system — including heightened activity in the brain's threat-detection center, reduced activity in the regions responsible for calm, rational thinking, and a nervous system that becomes primed to detect danger even in safe situations (Bremner, 2006; van der Kolk, 2014). This isn't a metaphor — it reflects real, documented shifts in brain function and physiology. The e

Quick answer: Low sexual desire following an attachment wound — a significant relational injury like betrayal, abandonment, or repeated emotional unavailability — is often not primarily a problem of attraction. It's frequently a nervous system response: when safety and trust have been damaged, the body's threat-detection system can suppress sexual desire as a protective measure, the same way it would suppress hunger or curiosity during any period of perceived danger (Bancroft

Quick answer: Trauma responses are automatic, involuntary reactions the nervous system produces when it perceives a threat — commonly described as fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. These responses originate in the body's threat-detection system, not in conscious decision-making, which is why they can feel confusing or out of a person's control (Bracha, 2004; van der Kolk, 2014). They're not signs of weakness or overreaction — they're the nervous system doing exactly what it ev

Quick answer: Research consistently links adult ADHD to lower relationship satisfaction, more negative conflict behavior, and higher rates of separation or divorce compared to couples without ADHD (Wymbs et al., 2021). However, this risk is not uniform — it depends heavily on which ADHD symptoms are present (impulsivity appears to matter more than inattention alone) and on the non-ADHD partner's own attachment style (Canu et al., 2014; Knies et al., 2021). ADHD does not doom

Many conversations about ADHD and autism focus on behaviour: attention, impulsivity, social differences. Underneath these experiences is something deeper: the nervous system. For neurodivergent individuals, regulation is not simply about “calming down” or using the right coping strategy. It’s about understanding how your nervous system responds to the world, and why those responses may look different from neurotypical expectations. What Is Regulation, Really? Regulation refer

For many people, the first time they encounter terms like ADHD, autism, or AuDHD, it’s through a diagnostic lens: lists of symptoms, impairments, and what isn’t working. While this framework can be helpful for accessing support, it can also shape how people come to see themselves: as disordered, deficient, or somehow “less than.” But there is another way of understanding neurodivergence, one that moves beyond deficit and toward difference, context, and lived experience. What

If you and your partner keep having the same argument about chores, communication, or time together you’re not alone. Many couples feel stuck in a loop, wondering why nothing ever fully resolves, no matter how many times they’ve talked it through. What’s often most frustrating is this: both partners are trying. And yet, the same tension returns sometimes quickly, sometimes weeks later with a familiar emotional charge that’s hard to shift. It’s Not Really About the Dishes Most

A guide for partners navigating connection, communication, and neurodivergence Relationships are complex for everyone. But when one or both partners have ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), certain patterns can appear that feel confusing, frustrating, or even painful for both people. Many couples come into therapy believing their relationship problems are about effort, commitment, or compatibility. In reality, what they’re experiencing is often the impact of neur

Many of us grow up with the idea that gender is simple: you’re either male or female, and everything else: how you dress, who you love, how you see yourself should line up neatly with that. But for many people, that’s not how it feels at all. Instead, gender can feel layered, fluid, or even confusing. If you’ve ever wondered Where do I fit? or Why don’t the usual boxes make sense to me? , the Gender Unicorn can be a gentle and helpful place to start. The Gender Unicorn, crea
