ADHD, Autism, and the Nervous System: Why Regulation Looks Different

Many conversations about ADHD and autism focus on behaviour: attention, impulsivity, social differences. Underneath these experiences is something deeper: the nervous system.
For neurodivergent individuals, regulation is not simply about “calming down” or using the right coping strategy. It’s about understanding how your nervous system responds to the world, and why those responses may look different from neurotypical expectations.
What Is Regulation, Really?
Regulation refers to your ability to manage energy, emotions, attention, and sensory input in a way that allows you to function and feel relatively stable.
But regulation isn’t just a mindset, it’s physiological.
Your nervous system is constantly scanning for:
Safety
Threat
Overwhelm
Stimulation
Based on what it detects, it shifts your body into different states.
Why Regulation Looks Different in ADHD and Autism
For individuals with ADHD, autism, or both (AuDHD), the nervous system often processes:
Stimuli more intensely (sounds, lights, textures, emotions)
Transitions more abruptly (difficulty shifting between tasks or states)
Energy and attention less linearly (fluctuating focus, bursts of engagement, or shutdown)
This can mean:
Becoming overwhelmed more quickly
Taking longer to return to baseline
Needing different types of input to regulate
What might look like “overreacting” or “shutting down” is often a nervous system response, not a choice.
Common Regulation Patterns
You might notice patterns such as:
Hyperarousal: anxiety, restlessness, irritability, racing thoughts
Hypoarousal: shutdown, fatigue, disconnection, low motivation
Rapid shifts between states
These states are adaptive; they’re your body’s way of responding to what it perceives as too much, too fast, or not enough.
Why Traditional Strategies Don’t Always Work
Many common coping strategies assume a more stable baseline. For example:
“Just take a few deep breaths”
“Focus harder”
“Push through it”
For neurodivergent individuals, these approaches can feel ineffective or even frustrating because they don’t address the underlying nervous system needs.
Regulation as Personal and Contextual
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to regulation.
What helps one person may not help another and what helps in one moment may not work in the next.
Regulation might look like:
Movement or stimming
Reducing sensory input (quiet, dim lighting)
Increasing stimulation (music, fidgeting, pressure)
Structured routines or predictable environments
Taking breaks before reaching overwhelm
The key is not to fit into a prescribed strategy, but to understand what your system needs in different moments.
Moving Toward Self-Understanding
Shifting how you think about regulation can be powerful.
Instead of asking:
“Why can’t I handle this?”
You might begin to ask:
“What is my nervous system responding to?”
“What would support me right now?”
This moves you from self-criticism to curiosity.
A More Compassionate Framework
When regulation is understood through a neurodivergent lens, it becomes less about control and more about support and adaptation.
Your nervous system is not broken. It’s responding in ways that make sense based on how it processes the world.
